Bingara, located in the New England Region of Northern New South Wales, has a reputation as the Gem on the Gwydir River. The historic township of Bingara is an appealing vintage gold mining village situated in the Gwydir River Valley. The township is enclosed by cypress-covered hills and is very popular with gold and gemstones fossickers, lovers of history, bushwalkers and anglers. The township of Bingara was established in 1840 and developed rapidly when gold was found out in the locality in 1851. Gemstones such as sapphires and tourmalines and gold can still be discovered by fossicking in the local stream and creeks. Bingara is situated about 550 km north of Sydney and 140 km north of Tamworth. The farms surrounding Bingara focused on sheep and fine wool, beef cattle, mixed horticulture, agriculture, pigs, wheat, sorghum, oil seed crops, poultry and timber. Bingara boasts some of Australia`s best known and valued beef cattle studs and a variety of other livestock breeders including, sheep, horses, alpacas and poultry.
