Running all along the wild and rugged southern coastline of Victoria, the Great Ocean Road is a famous tourist destination featuring wonderful beaches, spectacular ocean views, friendly coastal towns and a wide range of attractions and holiday activities. The Great Ocean Road offers visitors one of the most spectacular coastlines drives in Australia. The Great Ocean Road Region extends from Torquay to the South Australian Border west of Nelson and has a wonderful array of recreational opportunities from surfing, boating, kite surfing, sailing, diving, golf, mountain bike rides, bushwalking, windsurfing, sea kayaking, golf, canoeing and fishing, as well as many wonderful food outlets and wineries. Along the coast, there are many seaside resort towns such as Apollo Bay, Warnambool and Lorne that are the perfect bases for a surfing and family holidays at the beach. One of the most popular stretches of the coast is the spectacular scenery around Port Campbell where a series of striking rock outcrops, called the `Twelve Apostles` rise dramatically out of the Southern Ocean. The importance of the Great Ocean Road has finally been recognised as it been added to Australia's natural heritage list which gives extra protection. The heritage listing protects the iconic Bells Beach, that is a world renowned surfing spot and environment of the strip of land and coast all along the more than 270 km of road between Peter borough and Torquay, and the many tiny coastal towns and villages in between and the famous 'Twelve Apostles'. This is the 20th coastal area in Australia to be heritage listed. The Great Ocean Road was built as a memorial to the Victorian servicemen and women who fought in the Great War -WWI. Over 300 returned servicemen toiled on the Great Ocean Road for 13 years from 1919. There are a wonderful range of attractions and activities for visitors at its many locations: # Food and Wine - Savour mouth-watering local delicacies such as seafood or regionally produced cheeses. Visit one of the many produce vendors and markets to pick up fresh fruits, berries and olives. Enjoy the friendly hospitality in award-winning restaurants, or seaside cafes and tea rooms throughout the region. Call in at the cellar door of one of the many vineyards in the region. The modern vineyard plantings and winery development was rekindled in the 1960s when Seppelt planted their Drumborg vineyard. Many other vines were plantinged along the Great Ocean Road during the1980s and 1990s. The soils are fertile producing excellent Chardonnay, Riesling, Meunier, Pinot Noir and Shiraz. # Golf - Challenge yourself on a quality golf course. Barwon Heads is constantly rated as one of Australia's top courses, The Sands at Torquay is an excellent course and Warrnambool and Port Fairy courses offer stunning coastal views. # Nature and wildlife - Discover scenic attractions, wildlife and nature. See an amazing array of wildlife, the spectacular 12 Apostles, beautiful beaches, stunning rainforests, waterfalls and more.
