Lake Illawarra, located south of Wollongong and close to Dapto, is a large salt water lagoon connected to the ocean. The lake has more than 40km of shoreline and a surface area of about 40 square kilometres and offers a wonderful facility for water based recreation. The Lake is mostly shallow, but more than three quarters of it is navigable by yachts and small power boats. The lake is very popular for boating of all types from smaller types such as canoes, wind surfers and kayaks, up to large trailer sailers and motor cruisers that make use of its sheltered waters and low swell conditions. Lake Illawarra is an important wetland habitat for many native animals and many species of birds, including many migratory species that use the lake shore seasonally. Lake Illawarra is home to large flocks of black swans, pelicans, waders and diverse range of other waterbird species. Lake Illawarra is also very popular for fishing and for prawning in the summer months, using a lamp and net. There are excellent angling spots near the mouth of lake where it discharges into the ocean and on the local beaches close to the lake`s entrance. The lake is suitable for a wide range of aquatic activities such as sailing, all types of boating, wind surfing, water skiing, kite surfing, canoes,snorkelling and scuba diving, sea kayaks and many other activities. There is excellent surfing and swimming on the beaches and in the lake. The Illawarra Yacht Club is very popular and has hosted many National Sailing Titles and the Windsurfer Class World Championships. In summary, Lake Illawarra is simply heaven for boating. You can bring your own boat or hire one from one of the many local boatsheds. There are a large number of boat ramps dotted around the lake for easy access. Entertainment options are centred on Dapto, Oak Flats and the other towns on the western shore as well as Wollongong to the north and Shellharbour to the South.
