The Macarthur Region of Sydney includes the Local Government Areas of Camden, Campbelltown and Wollondilly on the western outskirts of Sydney. The Macarthur Region is characterized as the district where the developed urban streetscape makes the transition into the rural landscapes west of Sydney. The area is named after the famous early colonist John Macarthur, who was granted a land parcel about 5000 acres in 1803 at Cowpastures, which was the original name for the area. John Macarthur began grazing the famous Merino sheep species that became the foundation of Australia`s rich Wool Industry. John Macarthur and his sons were the pioneers of the dairy industry in the colony, fruit growing, grapes and wines, wheat growing, and a number of other crops. The region has a strong heritage and its array of fabulous attractions, amenities and rural setting is the focus for the many opportunities for recreation in the area. Macarthur is very popular for vacations and tourists who enjoy discovering the living heritage, horse riding, adventure tourism activities, bushwalking and the chance to learn about Australian experiences.
