The charming and fascinating tourist town of Stanley is located about 20 km from Smithton, in the Northern Region of Tasmania, about 230 km from Launceston, 100 km from Wynyard and 130 km from Devonport. The charming historic town of Stanley lies at the base of 'The Nut`, a large flat-topped rocky headland that is more than 150 m high. You can walk to the top or take the local chairlift and see spectacular views of the surrounding coastline. Stanley has retained the feeling of an historic small port and harbour with a small fishing fleet still using it for shelter and processing crayfish and various local fish species. The town features a delightful marine aquarium, many historic cottages and an array of art galleries and antique shops. In the wharf area there many stone historic buildings,
some of which have been converted to tourist facilities and to charming blue-stone accommodation. The Highfield Historic Site, located near Stanley dates from 1837, is home of the renowned Dieman's Land Company. The site includes the stables, homestead, barns and various workers` cottages, all in a charming setting. Tours of the historic site are run daily and there are ghost tours after dark, if you dare. The charming set of cottages below The Nut provides a unique picture-post card setting to this charming seaside town. There is a very friendly pub and various other entertainment choices in the surrounding towns. The local fishing trawlers and cray boats tie up near the old wharf as they have down for decades. The local lolly shop is world famous. There are many fine art and craft galleries,
a pub and food outlets in Stanley, and many interesting tourist attractions. South of Stanley are Mawbanna and Dip Falls and many other scenic attractions. The town is about 100 km drive from Wynyard, and has featured as the Premier Tourist Town in Tasmania more times than any other town in the past ten years. Excellent accommodation is very easy to find in Stanley, right on the waterfront. There is a caravan park nearby.
